Cape and Cowl's New Comic Book Day Reviews! January 29, 2020

Every week we go home on Tuesday night and read a bunch of comics to be ready for New Comic Book Day. Sometimes we write up little blurbs about them to put out in the shop so people know what’s what. In case you can’t make it in or just want to have a game plan before you visit, check out this week’s reviews!

Protector 1.jpg

PROTECTOR #1

A far future North America divided by various tribes is held firmly in check by a group of godlike Devas. Everything is thrown into turmoil when a young slave girl discovers a powerful robot and starts to fight back. We going to have ourselves a little uprising? Hopefully! Perfect for fans of Brandon Graham and Simon Roy’s Prophet and the art of Daniel Warren Johnson and Kyle Starks.

Thor 2.jpg

THOR #2

Thor JUST became the new all-father. He hasn’t even put his own butt dent in the throne yet! But all of a sudden Galactus comes crashing down on Asgard and for some reason that’s Thor’s problem? Weak. So a Thor’s gotta do what a Thor’s gotta do and becomes the new God-Herald of Galactus so the big dude can eat some planets and save the galaxy. Seriously, this is some super fun Thor.

Tec Annual 3.jpg

DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #3

R.I.P Alfred Thaddeus Crane Pennyworth. We miss you! Before Alfred was Alfred, he was P, a MI-6 super spy. Now that he’s gone, a former partner is here and giving Bruce Wayne the opportunity to close out P’s greatest assignment. This is rad and it makes us wonder why don’t we have a young Alfred super spy book?! Give us a young Alfred super spy book, DC!

Hawkeye Freefall 2.jpg

HAWEKEYE FREEFALL #2

We don’t care if he’s the worst Avenger, we love Hawkeye comics! He’s such a loveable loser, yet super not a loser! He’s the best. Anyway, someone is running around in his old Ronin costume causing all kinds of trouble and it’s seriously interfering with all the charity work our guy is doing to impress his girlfriend! (That’s not really the only reason he’s doing it. Is it?!)

Vagrant Queen 1.jpg

VAGRANT QUEEN: A PLANET CALLED DOOM #1

A lifetime ago, Elida was a child queen who was kicked off her throne and sent off to wander the galaxy alone. Years later a rescue mission to save her mom brought her home (check out the super cool Vagrant Queen Vol. 1). Now Elida has made a life for herself anonymously on a new planet only to have it all ripped away when she is captured by a mysterious group giving off some serious bad guy vibes!

Suicide Squad #2.jpg

SUICIDE SQUAD #2

Now this is some real Suicide Squad $#!& right here! We got away from this kind of Squad story the last few years. This isn’t a team of reluctant heroes with hearts of gold. These are bad guys who are forced to take on super shady missions that most people with a moral compass would never touch. Love it. Recommended!

Avengers Wastelands 1.jpg

AVENGERS OF THE WASTELANDS #1

We return to the world of Old Man Logan where the Red Skull one and the bad guys took over. Leave it to Doctor Doom to be unsatisfied with victory. Doom is marching through the country destroying cities taking down what remaining heroes there are. It’s time for a new band of Avengers to step up. Maybe they’ll even inspire some of the old guard to step up and help…
