Cape and Cowl's New Comic Book Day Reviews! January 14, 2020

Every week we go home on Tuesday night and read a bunch of comics to be ready for New Comic Book Day. Sometimes we write up little blurbs about them to put out in the shop so people know what’s what. In case you can’t make it in or just want to have a game plan before you visit, check out this week’s reviews!

Undiscovered Country 3.jpg

UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY #3

The United States has completely walled itself off from the rest of the world. Nobody has entered or left in 30 years and nobody on the outside knows what has happened behind the walls. Our “heroes” have crash landed inside and it looks like the country has turned into a completely alien landscape - new creatures, new societies, even new land masses. Sure the USA screws things up all the time, but what the hell happened here?!

Venom the End.jpg

VENOM: THE END #1

The final Venom story ever told! Kinda. More like, this is how it’s all going to end for our favorite tongue-wagging symbiote. It’ll probably just chase Spider-Man around for a few decades and then get tricked into fleeing back into outer space, right? Wrong! Venom is obviously the universe's last hope against apocalyptic robogenocide and the protector of ALL biological life. Obviously!

Soooo, thank you Venom?

Red Mother 2.jpg

RED MOTHER #2

Daisy and her boyfriend, Luke, were victims of an attack that resulted in Daisy needing a prosthetic eye and Luke vanishing completely. Now Daisy is having horrific visions of the Red Mother through her new eye and she’s convinced Luke is out there somewhere. Can she face her fears and confront the Red Mother? Oh, and what’s in the completely safe and not at all suspicious unmarked package left on her doorstep? Probably something super harmless.

Low low woods 2.jpg

THE LOW LOW WOODS #2

El and Octavia live in Shutter-to-Think, PA. A town full of deadly coal mines, sinkholes, and actual monsters. Worst of all, young women in town are regularly stripped of their memories and waking up in strange places. El wants to know what the hell is going on. Octavia just wants to get the hell out of town. We’re totally with El on this one. What’s going on and what are we going to do about it?!

The Question Deaths of Vic Sage #2.jpg

THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE #2

Vic Sage, the vigilante with no face was killed in modern day Hub City. Fortunately(?) death doesn’t stick and Vic wakes up in mid-1800’s Hub City! Now the man with no face is being terrorized by a mysterious villain with a million faces! This bad guy can be anyone at any timeand this is bad, bad news for our dude Vic. Jeff Lemire is great and Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz are legends. You should read this.

Batmans Grave #4.jpg

THE BATMAN’S GRAVE #4

When Warren Ellis started this story we never would have predicted it would be the most action packed Batman book on the stands, but check it out! Pages and pages of Batman busting up bad guys. Works for us! Plus, this book has 100% more Alfred than any other Bat-book out right now… What? Too soon? Sorry.

LOSH 3.jpg

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #3

Jon Kent has been through a lot and he really needs a friend. So he takes a real quick trip back in time to grab his best bud, Robin, and bring him back to the future to join the Legion! Great idea! No it’s not. Damien’s future is… uncertain (check out Grant Morrison’s future Damian stories from back in the day). Meanwhile, Ultra Boy’s dad is super pissed about Aquaman’s trident and Mordu is breaking out of prison on Planet Gotham. There’s a lot going on!
