Cape and Cowl's New Comic Book Day Reviews! February 25th, 2020!

Every week we go home on Tuesday night and read a bunch of comics to be ready for New Comic Book Day. Sometimes we write up little blurbs about them to put out in the shop so people know what’s what. In case you can’t make it in or just want to have a game plan before you visit, check out this week’s reviews!

GSX Jean + Emma.jpg

GIANT SIZE X-MEN: JEAN GREY + EMMA FROST #1

What’s eating Ororo Munroe? Storm has been incapacitated, and it’s up to top telepathic talents Jean Grey & Emma Frost to find out how! This psychedelic deep dive into the mind of a mutant goddess doubles as artist Dauterman’s tribute to a classic Grant Morrison / Frank Quitely issue. ‘NUFF SAID!

Leviathan Dawn 1.jpg

LEVIATHAN DAWN #1

Leviathan came out of nowhere and did something the likes of Darkseid, Lex Luthor, the Joker, and all the other villains never could. Leviathan won. The world’s intelligence community is busted and nothing works the way it’s supposed to. Nobody trusts anybody and they really shouldn’t anyway. Good news! There’s a group of heroes who are suuuper angry and ready to fight back. Bad news! They’re waaaaay too late.

Falcon Winter Soldier 1.jpg

FALCON & WINTER SOLDIER #1

Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes appear to have exactly one thing in common: they were both Captain America for a minute. Unfortunately, beyond that there’s really not much that would make you think these two would make a good team or anything. Well, they better figure something out because Hydra is back and there’s some super creepy, super annoying kid out there killing people for them. Ugh! We hate this kid SO MUCH!

Finger Guns 1.jpg

FINGER GUNS #1

A couple of kids with pretty crappy home lives discover that they have something pretty sweet in common: they both have the power to manipulate other people’s emotions by firing finger guns at them. One finger makes people happy and two fingers makes people super duper angry. What could go wrong?! When have angsty teens ever mishandled their own or other people’s emotions?!

X-force 8.jpg

X-FORCE #8

The dominoes are all lined up... but push just one and they all go tumbling down! Former flames Colossus and Domino reignite some spark as they close in on those responsible for her diminishing luck... with shocking results! It’s a chain reaction like only X-Force can bring!

TMNT Jennika 1.jpg

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: JENNIKA #1

There’s a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and she’s a punk rock badass! Unlike the original turtles, Jennika isn’t a little reptile who grows up into a walking, talking humanoid. She was human and has been mutated into a turtle! That blows! So we’re going to give her a pass if she wants to get some anger out by pounding on some bad seeds, okay?

Far Sector 4.jpg

FAR SECTOR #4

Jo Mullein got a pretty sweet gig for a Green Lantern: protect a city of billions of aliens who have had all their emotions genetically removed by the government. Easy peasy! Or it would be easy peasy if there wasn’t an incredibly popular street drug going around that allows users to feel things again. And it would be especially easy peasy if these fresh emotions didn’t lead to murders and riots!

X-Men FF 2.jpg

X-MEN / FANTASTIC FOUR #2

The X-Men are over here like, “Franklin Richards is a mutant. He should live on Krakoa!” And the Fantastic Four are over here like, “Franklin is our baby and needs to be with his mama!” Meanwhile, Dr. Doom is over here like, “The boy belongs with me, his creepy ‘uncle’ and I’ll kill people with robots if they say otherwise!” And we’re over here like, “Oh $#!!!!!!&”

Ant Man 2.jpg

ANT-MAN #2

Ant-Man isn’t really an ant. He can get small like an ant, he’s proportionately strong like an ant, but he’s still just a man in a suit with a theme. So what does he do when he’s confronted by people that actually are made out of bugs? What’s he going to do to the guy made out of beetles, or the lady made out of silk worms, or the old Nazi made out of bees? Yeah, there’s a Nazi bee guy in here. Go get ‘em, (non-literal) Ant-Man!

New Mutants 8.jpg

NEW MUTANTS #8

Nova Roma is the home of Amara Aquilla aka Magma of the New Mutants — but lately, it’s also been home to some pretty nasty mutant-eating monsters! As Magma, Armor, and Boom-Boom handle some crisis-control, Sebastian Shaw reaffirms his authority over the black market. Things are heating up!

x-men 7.jpg

X-MEN #7

Resurrection is a common practice on Krakoa, but who defines the parameters of the results? What are the wills and testaments of mutantkind? Ethics of the body and soul come into question as Cyclops and Nightcrawler witness the beginnings of a morbid new ritual: The Crucible!
